Health and Safety Representative Training

Everyone has the right to be healthy and safe at work. As a Health and Safety Representative, you have an important role in ensuring your workplace is healthy and safe by:

  • representing workers on health and safety matters
  • making recommendations on health and safety
  • investigating complaints and risks to worker health and safety
  • monitoring health and safety measures taken by the PCBU
  • giving feedback to the PCBU about how it is meeting its duties

Being a Health and Safety Rep may sound like a big responsibility - thankfully our partners at Worksafe Reps have training to help you out.

Initial Health and Safety Rep Training

This initial training course is for Health and Safety Representatives. The content covers Unit Standard 29315 ‘Describe the role and functions of the Health and Safety Representative in a NZ workplace’, and equips Health and Safety Reps with the skills to promote a safer and healthier place of work.

Session 1: Overview of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015
Session 2: Duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015
Session 3: Worker Engagement, Participation, and Representation
Session 4: The Role and Functions of WorkSafe NZ as they Apply to the Role of the Health and Safety Representative
Session 5: Risk Management
Session 6: PINS and Cease Work

This course is run by our partners Worksafe Reps. They regularly run courses all over New Zealand.

Stage Two Health and Safety Rep Training

This course is for experienced Health and Safety Reps who are looking to extend their knowledge of risk management.

Session 1: Working together to manage health and safety risk
Session 2: Why report and investigate events?
Session 3: Response to an event
Session 4: Plan an investigation
Session 5: What happened? (Collecting facts)
Session 6: Why did it happen? (Analyse immediate and underlying causes)
Session 7: What will we do about it? (Manage risk and make recommendations)
Session 8: How will we keep it safe?
Session 9: Investigating an event (case study)
Session 10: Worker Engagement, Participation, and Representation
